2004 - Euro 2004 & Tsunami

Waking from their Christmas slumber on Boxing Day 2004, the world was greeted with the tragic news that an earthquake had occurred just off the coast of Indonesia. The quake, the most powerful for 40 years, triggered a series of deadly waves (a Tsunami), which spread across the Indian Ocean. At least 150,000 people in coastal areas from Somalia to Sumatra were killed and many millions left destitute.

UEFA Euro 2004Earlier in the year, hosts Portugal experienced a shock of their own in the European Championship, being beaten in the final by dark-horses Greece. It was the culmination of a series of highly organised and disciplined displays from the Mediterranean's whose chances had been written off before the tournament began. England faired less well, failing to pass the Quarter-final stage. Almost inevitably, they were undone by a penalty shootout, with Darius Vassell failing to convert the crucial kick. Expect his face to feature in Pizza Hut adverts soon.

2005 - Celebrations & Terror Attacks

England - Ashes Winners 2005

2005 will be mainly remembered for two, contrasting events. A highly distressing event occurred on July 7th, when the population of Great Britain woke to the shocking news that London had fallen victim to a terrorist attack. In stark contrast for the England Cricket team, the year was one of great celebration with the Team winning back the Ashes from Australia after 16 years.

Michael Vaughen's captaincy was a crucial factor in leading the team to an amazing victory, although each of the 12 English players played their part. In total, England lost only one game to Australia, drawing two and winning two to secure the Ashes. To mark the occasion, the team celebrated in front of 25,000 people on the streets of London in spectacular fashion, a fitting finale to a summer of cricket which will remain etched on English minds forever.

7th July 2005The Ashes celebrations in London were particularly poignant in light of the devastating events that had occurred in the city on Thursday 7th July. Three bombs exploded on three Tube trains which went off simultaneously at around 08.50am. The final explosion was around an hour later on a double-decker bus in Tavistock Square, not far from King's Cross.

2006 - Heatwave & Steve Irwin

As you've been reading, a large amount can happen throughout a year but in 2006 there were many big headlines such as the Heatwave across Great Britian, Steve Irwins death and the worlds first face transplant.

Satellite Images Showing Sharp Rises In Temperatures - BBC SourceWith temperatures of 36.5C in Surrey, 19th July provided the month's hottest day on record. Temperatures in Great Britain exceeded those in many popular holiday destinations as Malta, Athens, Bermuda and Rome.

With the hot temperature also came hose pipe bans. Thames Water customers were the most severly affected with the ban still in force during December and possibly into 2007.

As temperatures soared across the country, the heat brought people to the beaches and into the shade, melted roads and provoked health and safety warnings. On the roads, emergency measures were brought in to protect surfaces with gritters spreading gravel after the asphalt began to melt.

Steve IrwinMr Irwin, 44, died after being struck in the chest by the stingray's barb while he was filming a documentary in Queensland's Great Barrier Reef.

Paramedics from Cairns rushed to the scene but were unable to save him.

He was famous for handling dangerous creatures such as crocodiles, snakes and spiders, and his documentaries on his work with crocodiles drew a worldwide audience.
